There is an interesting story to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just over the border from next door Thailand, in which casino gaming is against the law. Eight casinos are anchored in a relatively tiny space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime destination, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of restrictions requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; still, financial sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 17:00, and although visas are apparently needed to pass, there are ways around this, as is real of most borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau casino, contains 150 one armed bandits and sixty table games. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machine games and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 table games, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel compound that contains numerous amenities accompanying the gambling den, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight gaming tables.
